About Glen Water

Environment

Glen Water is committed to delivering value for money and sustainable water solutions to support the economic future of Northern Ireland.

In deliverying Project Omega the company has committed to protecing public health, safeguarding the environment and creating cleaner beaches, loughs and rivers for future generations.

The company has embraced a sustainable environmental approach in all aspects of the Project's delivery.

For example the site of the new Wastewater Treatment Works at Donaghadee will be landscaped with a 'greenroof' to ensure it is in complete sympathy with the surrounding landform and that the impact on the environment is minimised. Trees will also be planted to reduce the Work's carbon footprint.

All site waste is segrated and recycled, for example, all rock excavated from all sites is graded and used for site roads and infill at the rear of the site of the new WWTW and for backfill on pipeline routes. To date over 105,000 cubic metres has been excavated.

In addition to these measures all staff are encouraged to reduce carbon emissions through a wide range of initiatives. For example push taps water taps and push button timer light swtich have been installed on site. All waste is segregrated at source and waste paper is shredded and distributed to local farmers for bedding for cattle and horses.

It is also hoped that wet lands areas will be developed on a number of sites planted out with reeds and native water plants. This would encourage native wildlife to occupy the areas and breed.
